I stopped by the library recently and to my delight, I saw that a new box of books had been delivered! Being the total book nerd that I am, I am pretty sure I squealed in delight. (But don't tell anyone, k?)
One of the new books that arrived was one that was on my "to read" list, so I was super stoked to see it in the box. I started reading it right away and am totally hooked on the story line.
An Ember in the Ashes is author Sabba Tahir's first novel. Read this excerpt from the book jacket:
"Under the martial empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the exectution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.
It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older borther. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire's impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They've seen what happens to those who do.
But when Laia's brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebeles who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire's greatest military academy.
There, Laia meets Elias, the school's finest solider -- and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he's being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are interwined -- and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself."
I am about half-way through the book and I have enjoyed every second of it. The two main characters, Laia and Elias, alternate narrating the story and both are extremely likeable characters. The plot is interesting, the story is unique, and hopefully, the ending is good...? : ) LOL.
If you enjoy reading fantasy and dystopian books, you would definitely enjoy this book. Visit the local library or stop by our library when school reopens in September! Hope you guys are having a fabulous summer!
