I have to admit that it took me a while to pick up Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The cover is haunting, so I assumed the book was a little too scary for my taste buds...but I was wrong. There, I'll admit it. (Sidenote: Do not mention it to Mr. Todd that I actually admitted I was wrong about something. Please and thank you.) When I finally summoned the courage to pick up MPHPC, I was entranced. The book was glorious. Creepy, yes, but intriguing and flawlessly written.
When Hollow City, the sequel to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, was released, I was yet again creeped out by the cover. I put it on my shelf, but found myself not wanting to read it -- not wanting to be disappointed as sequels often leave me feeling. However, the author, Ransom Riggs, managed to write an equally intriguing sequel.
So what's it all about it? Both Miss Peregrine and Hollow City are about Jacob, a seemingly normal teenager. His grandfather dies a gruesome and mysterious death; his death sends Jacob on a journey for answers. His journey takes him to the (fictitious) island of Cairnholm. What ensues is...well, peculiar. Cue: time loop to 1940, children with peculiar gifts, and bad people that want to take the peculiar gifts from the children and use the gifts to take over the world (muawahahahaha!) (I generally try to insert a sinister laugh at least once into my every day life, so today's quota is already met and it's not even 9 a.m..). Jacob is forced to make tough decisions and in the process, begins to find himself as a person.
If you pick up this series, you will not be disappointed. Everything about it is simply perfect and I adore it. This is one of those cases when I learned that you definitely cannot judge a book by it's cover. Wink wink.
ps/ I am eagerly awaiting the third installment, Library of Souls, which will be published in September!
